  • Sleep research- Basic and applied
  • Basic Research: To study neural dynamics in brain after sleep deprivation using animal models and simulation protocols in human. To identify the role of sleep during different phases of development on cognitive programming. To look for mechanism that interlinks sleep-body temperature in conditions of sleep restriction and scientific evaluation of Ayurvedic principles for regulation of sleep.
  • Translational Research: Evaluation of ambient temperature manipulation as a non-pharmacological intervention for treatment of primary insomnia and to evaluate inflammatory markers after acute and chronic sleep deprivation.
  • Teaching: Basic Neurophysiology and Neurodiagnostics to Neuro-technicians & MTech students

Major Achievements

  • Established a specialized new research laboratory, Division of Sleep Research, of International standard at Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences & Technology, Trivandrum. The translational research pertains to theme that affects each one of us in current era of 24X7.
  • Introduced 2 new PhD modules in Neurophysiology with 2 Credits after approval from BOS in the Institutes Academic program
  • Pursued and introduced new course module, Neurophysiology of Sleep, for the PhD comprehensive examination in the Institutes Academic program.

Organisational Activities

  • IBRO-APRC SCHOOL 2019, Dr Kamalesh K Gulia, SIC of Division of Sleep Research, organized IBRO-APRC SCHOOL 2019: International Neuroscience School on Advanced Techniques to Explore the Functions of Normal & Diseased Brain from 22nd April to 6th May 2019, BMT Wing, SCTIMST, Trivandrum, Kerala, India. The School was supported by IBRO APRC, France.
  • Dr Kamalesh K Gulia, SIC of Division of Sleep Research (then named as Sleep Disorders Research Laboratory) organized ASRS-2014 International conference at Kovalam during September 22-24, 2014. It was attended by delegates, Sleep Medicine experts and Sleep Researchers from 16 countries including Japan, USA, Australia, Finland, Singapore, China, Taiwan, Georgia, France, Switzerland, Germany, Russia, Turkey, Israel and India
  • Organized National Conference (4th National Conference of India Society for Sleep Research) successfully on December 13, 2010 in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. As Organizing Secretary (Kamalesh K Gulia) of the ISSR 2010, generous support was received from ICMR, CSIR and DBT.
  • Organized 5th National Sleep Medicine Course Workshop (NSMC-2010), an advance Course/ Workshop by Indo-Japan-US Faculty in collaboration with ISSR (Indian Society of Sleep Research) in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala during December 11-12, 2010. As Organizing Secretary (Kamalesh K Gulia) of the NSMC 2010, financial support was obtained from the DST.
